Offchain Labs Implements Dencun Upgrade for Arbitrum Ecosystem
Offchain Labs, the core contributor to Arbitrum, has introduced the Dencun upgrade within the Arbitrum ecosystem through the ArbOS 20 upgrade known as “Atlas.” This upgrade aims to reduce Ethereum Layer 2 transaction costs by integrating the blob transactions feature.
Reducing Transaction Costs with Blob Transactions
The Atlas upgrade on Arbitrum is designed to lower transaction costs on Ethereum Layer 2 by incorporating the blob transactions feature. This feature was made available after the recent launch of Dencun and received governance approval from Arbitrum DAO.
The Dencun upgrade introduced a new transaction type called blobs, which revolutionizes how chains store information on Ethereum. Unlike the traditional “calldata” approach, blobs pave the way for significant reductions in transaction fees for Layer 2 networks like Arbitrum.
Implementing Blobs on Layer 2 Chains
To integrate blobs, Layer 2 chains need to undergo software updates. Arbitrum is among the latest networks to implement this feature. Other Layer 2 networks such as Optimism, Base, and Starknet have already integrated blob transactions and have experienced notable reductions in average transaction fees.
Anticipated Fee Reductions on Arbitrum
With the Atlas upgrade, Offchain Labs expects a significant decrease in Arbitrum’s minimum base fee from 0.1 gwei to 0.01 gwei, representing a tenfold reduction. Previously averaging at $0.5, Arbitrum’s transaction fees could potentially decrease to approximately $0.05 following this upgrade.
Steven Goldfeder, CEO and co-founder of Offchain Labs, expressed excitement about the upgrade and its potential benefits for the community in terms of improved transaction pricing.
Assistance from Service Providers
Offchain Labs also announced that several service providers, including Altlayer, Caldera, Conduit, and Gelato, which focus on Arbitrum, will assist in the transition for individual Orbit chains that utilize Arbitrum’s software stack. Additionally, Offchain Labs clarified that implementing the ArbOS Atlas upgrade on Orbit chains does not require approval from the Arbitrum DAO governance process.

Arbitrum stands as the most widely used Layer 2 network on Ethereum in terms of active wallets. It also boasts the highest total value locked among Layer 2 solutions, amounting to nearly $3.5 billion. The network supports popular decentralized applications such as Uniswap, GMX, and Aave.
