Artificial intelligence (AI) may the โthe most consequentialโ technological change in our lifetime, and governments now must learn how to control it, reportsย by Microsoft President Brad Smith.
Speaking at a panel discussion in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, Smith stated that โ Government hasย toย move fasterโ to stay on top of the developments that are happening in AI.
And while Smith wasย known for governments to step up, he likewise stated that the private sector has a role to play in controlling how Artificialย Intelligenceย (AI) develops.
As part of the private sectorโs role, Smith announced Microsoftโs โ5-point blueprint for governing AI,โ saying onย Twitterย platform that the firmโs aim is to attract the public and private sector together so that Artificialย Intelligenceย (AI) โserves all society.โ
Inย theย meantime, in comments given to the New York Times, Smith suggested that the Government should require corporations that work on advanced Artificialย Intelligenceย (AI) models to obtain a license.
โ Thatย implies you notify the Government when you start testing,โ Smith stated, while adding that results from ongoing operations likewise should be shared with the government:
โYouโve got to share results with the Government. Even when itโs licensed for deployment, you have a duty continuation to monitor it and report to the Government if there are unexpected issues that arise.โ
Still, Smith acknowledged that he and Microsoft, one of ChatGPT-maker OpenAIโs owners, doย not necessarily know what the past course of action is for the government.
โWe doย not necessarily have the best information or the best answer, or we may not be the most credible speaker. Onย theย otherย hand, you know, atย thisย time, especially in Washington D.C., people are looking for ideas,โ he said.
Reportsย by some estimates, Microsoft has spent some $13 Billion on backing OpenAI and on integrating the ChatGPT into its Bing search engine.
The comments from Microsoftโs President comesย after greaterย than 1,100 industry insiders in March signed an open letter asking governments to โpause giant Artificialย Intelligenceย (AI) experiments.โ
โ Artificialย Intelligenceย (AI) systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound dangers to society and humanity,โ the specialists wrote in the letter, while calling for โall Artificialย Intelligenceย (AI) labs to instantly pause for at least 6 months the training of Artificialย Intelligenceย (AI) systems more powerful than GPT-4.โ
