Ron De Santis declares presidential candidacy, supports citizens right to use Bitcoin


Florida Governor Ron De Santis announces his entry into the 2024 US Presidential race, positioning himself as a pro-crypto and anti-CBDC candidate, and potentially Donald Trump’s biggest Republican primary opponent.

Andย once requested about his view on cryptocurrenciesย  regulatory situation in the United States, De Santis stated that citizens have โ€œevery right to do Bitcoin,โ€ and would oppose any statute to ban its use.ย 

โ€œAs President, weโ€™ll protect theย  potential to do things like Bitcoin,โ€ stated De Santis. โ€œI just doย not have the itch to control everything that people couldย be doing in this space.โ€

De Santis echoed comments from other crypto-supportive Republicans in agreeing that the Biden Administration is tryingย to kill the cryptocurrency industry in theย  Unitedย States through regulation. After a string of regulatorsโ€™ enforcement actions against exchanges, cryptoย stablecoin issuers, and crypto-supportive banks, corporations like Coinbaseย Cryptoย exchange are desperate for clarity on the regulations of the road surrounding cryptocurrency in the United States.ย 

โ€œ Theย present regime โ€“ clearly they have it out for Bitcoin, and if it continuesย  for another four years, theyโ€™ll probably end up killing it,โ€ he added.

At Bitcoinย (BTC) Miami 2023 pastย week, Democratic Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy pledged toย guard citizensโ€™ โ€œinviolable rightโ€ to hold and use Bitcoin. Miami Mayor Francis Suarez is himself a Bitcoinย (BTC) believer, believing it provides advantages over the fiat currency system.ย

No CBDCs for De Santis

By contrast, the Biden White House has expressed interest in implementing a potential CBDC to โ€œ attract the Unitedย States financial infrastructure into the digital eraโ€ฆ without theย  dangers or irrational exuberance brought by cryptocurrency assets.โ€

Similar to Republic Congressmen Tom Emmer and Ted Cruz, De Santis is outright opposed to CBDCs. He introduced legislation in March to ban any such technology from being used in Florida.ย 

โ€œI see it as a substantial transfer of power from individual consumers to a central authority, and I doย not think thatโ€™s good for a free society,โ€ he said.
