Nicholas Coppola, the mastermind behind a massive cryptocurrency scam, has been sent to prison.
The decision was made by the Judge of the Court of Verona, following a request from the public prosecutor. It was discovered during Coppola’s house arrest that he had access to smartphones and computers, which were used for fraudulent activities. Despite the restrictions imposed on him, he continued to communicate and could potentially carry out further criminal acts or attempt to escape.
The Crypto Scam
Coppola’s crypto scam started at least in 2021. Through his social media profiles with over 26 thousand followers, he portrayed himself as a highly successful person in the financial field and promoted events and companies in the cryptocurrency investment world. Intrigued by his lavish lifestyle, victims followed his advice and invested in what turned out to be Ponzi schemes. The money invested by victims was used to partially repay new investors.
Bitconned on Netflix
Crypto scams often follow a similar pattern of flaunting wealth to entice victims into investing their money. Netflix recently released a documentary film called “Bitconned,” which tells the story of Ray Trapani’s crypto scam and the rise and fall of Centra Tech. Trapani created one of the largest crypto scams in 2017 through Centra Tech, offering a debit card and conducting an ICO that raised $25 million. Trapani pleaded guilty to charges related to investor fraud and has been ordered to repay over $2.6 million along with his prison sentence.
