Joseph O’Connor, also known as PlugwalkJoe, a British hacker, has been sentenced to five years in prison in the United States for his involvement in a SIM swap attack. The attack targeted a high-profile cryptocurrency exchange executive, resulting in the theft of approximately $794,000 worth of digital assets. PlugwalkJoe was initially apprehended in Spain and extradited to the US to face charges. He pleaded guilty and received a prison sentence, three years of supervised release, and was ordered to make a substantial forfeiture payment. The stolen cryptocurrency was laundered through transfers, transactions, and conversion into Bitcoin. PlugwalkJoe was also involved in the Twitter hack in 2020, accumulating $120,000 in illicit cryptocurrency gains. He engaged in fraudulent activities, including schemes to defraud others and selling access to hacked accounts. PlugwalkJoe also attempted to blackmail and stalk individuals, orchestrating swatting attacks.
