Authorities in Libya conducted a raid on a data center in their efforts to combat illegal cryptocurrency mining in the country. As a result, 50 Chinese nationals were detained for their involvement in the mining operations. It was discovered that minors were also involved in generating virtual currencies with the assistance of the Chinese individuals. The mining operations were conducted in structures without windows and contained numerous industrial fans, computers, and hardware. This raid followed the dismantling of another illegal mining farm operated by 10 Chinese nationals in the city of Misrata. Despite Libya’s central bank banning cryptocurrency transactions, the country has become a popular location for crypto mining due to its low cost of electricity and operations. Many other countries have banned or restricted crypto mining activities, citing concerns over the environment and illicit activities. In Morocco, a French citizen was recently convicted of using bitcoin illegally and faced significant fines and prison time.
