Chinese Police Bust Elaborate Crypto Drug Trafficking Network

The police in Shanghai have dismantled a cross-province drug trafficking gang in China and uncovered a network of software contacts and cryptocurrency payments used to cover their tracks. Drug users and traffickers utilized “overseas social software” to establish contact, while payments were made using crypto assets. The traffickers would hide packages of narcotics in specific locations. The police revealed the case on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, stating that it involved the sale, cultivation, processing, and sale of drugs by a criminal gang through a contactless internet drug trafficking chain. The police faced challenges as the drug dealers demanded payments in crypto, making it difficult to identify them. However, they made multiple arrests after finding video footage and locating the narcotics hidden in a mailbox. The increasing use of the crypto market and overseas social media platforms in China has led to the proliferation of online drug trafficking and similar transactions. China has had a complicated relationship with the crypto sector, ranging from banning crypto mining to approving the use of crypto to settle debts.
