Bitcoin mining and data center hosting company Riot Platforms has announced its plan to purchase 33,280 next-generation bitcoin miners from MicroBT, a manufacturer based in the United States. The purchase, totaling $162.9 million, will nearly double Riot’s existing capacity by mid-2024. The new miners will be deployed at Riot’s Corsicana facility in Texas and will increase the company’s self-mining hashrate to 20.1 EH/s. This purchase represents a 35% increase in Riot’s current number of miners. Additionally, Riot has the option to acquire an additional 66,650 miners from MicroBT, potentially expanding its computing power to 35.4 EH/s. These new miners are specifically designed for immersion cooling systems and are considered among the most powerful and efficient miners available. MicroBT will manufacture the miners at its facility in Pittsburgh, contributing to the expansion of its US-based manufacturing business. Delivery of the new miners is expected to begin in December 2023, with deployment planned for the first quarter of 2024. Riot reported $259.2 million in revenue for the year ending December 2022 and saw a significant increase in its hashrate last year.
