Damus, a Nostr-based app, is fighting back against its removal from the Apple App Store. Apple claimed that Damus was selling content, but the app denies this and calls it “nonsense.” Despite updating the app to clarify that no digital content is being unlocked, Damus is still being removed from the app store. The app insists that the only involvement of crypto is when users are tipped for their posts, not paid for content. Damus suggests using the ‘zap’ button to address the issue, which is used for tipping users. In response to a user’s suggestion of a lawsuit against Apple, Damus responded with a “maybe.” Another user suggested paying Apple’s 30% tax, but Damus dismissed this as it doesn’t host any paid content.
Earlier this month, Apple warned Damus about potential removal and asked them to update the app, which Damus complied with. The updated app now clarifies that it only has a tip button for facilitating peer-to-peer transactions. Some upset users compared Damus to Facebook, arguing that it was unfairly targeted due to its smaller user base. Apple has also rejected the Zeus Bitcoin wallet over licensing violations, leading to discussions about the potential threat of Apple’s app store updates to web3. Despite the removal, Damus is determined to appeal the decision and hopes for an overturning of the ruling.
