Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution Optimism is adding zero-knowledge proofs
Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution Optimism is moving forward with two proposals to add zero-knowledge proofs. The goal is to enable secure and efficient cross-chain communication between layers and directly between OP chains. The proposals, put forward by O(1) Labs and RISC Zero, aim to revamp Optimism’s tech stack and bring zk-proof capabilities to the platform.
Zk-proof proposals:
- RISC Zero suggests upgrading Optimism’s fault protocol to use zero-knowledge proofs, reducing the time to achieve finality and ensuring the correctness of state changes.
- O(1) Labs proposes creating a new fault-proof solution using the zk-proof system Kimchi, improving performance, security, and compatibility with existing systems.
The original request for proposal sought to enhance the protocol’s cross-chain communication capabilities by integrating zk-proofs. The Optimism Foundation plans to reach out to O(1) Labs and RISC Zero directly to discuss expectations and kick off the project.
Hot Take:
The addition of zero-knowledge proofs to Optimism’s Layer 2 scaling solution is a significant step towards enhancing privacy, security, and efficiency in blockchain transactions. By leveraging these proofs, Optimism can improve the correctness of state changes, decrease latency, and make the platform more affordable. This development aligns with Optimism’s vision of becoming a “superchain” and reinforces its position as a leading Ethereum scaling solution.
