Sony announces price increase for PlayStation Plus yearly plans
Sony has announced that it will be increasing the prices of its yearly plans for the PlayStation Plus game subscription service starting on September 6. The service, which offers online play for PlayStation 5 and PS4 gamers and provides free downloadable games each month, currently offers three subscription tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium. The new prices for yearly subscriptions will be $79.99, $134.99, and $159.99 for Essential, Extra, and Premium, respectively. This means a price increase of 33% for Essential plans, 35% for Extra plans, and 33% for Premium plans. Monthly and three-month subscriptions will remain unchanged for now.
Key points:
- PlayStation Plus yearly plans will see price increases starting from September 6
- New prices for yearly subscriptions will be $79.99, $134.99, and $159.99 for Essential, Extra, and Premium, respectively
- Monthly and three-month subscriptions will not be affected for now
- Existing annual subscriptions purchased before September 6 will not be affected until they expire
- The price increase is aimed at allowing Sony to continue bringing high-quality games and value-added benefits to the subscription service
This price increase may disappoint some PlayStation Plus subscribers, but considering the fact that monthly subscriptions would cost even more over the course of a year, an annual subscription still remains a better deal. Additionally, PlayStation Plus offers access to a wide variety of classic PlayStation, PS4, and PS5 games without the need to purchase each game individually. This move by Sony is in line with Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass, which also offers a subscription-based service. Xbox Game Pass, however, only offers monthly subscriptions with different pricing tiers.
Hot Take: While the price increase may not be welcomed by all PlayStation Plus subscribers, the value and benefits offered by the service still make an annual subscription a worthwhile investment, especially compared to the monthly subscription options offered by competitors.
