Vitalik Buterin’s Social Media Account Compromised in NFT Scam
Hackers managed to gain unauthorized access to the social media account of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and used it to promote a fraudulent non-fungible token (NFT) scheme. Dmitry Buterin, Vitalik’s father, alerted users to the compromised account after a false announcement was made claiming that Consensys, a blockchain software company, was giving away a commemorative NFT. The post included a link to a phishing site that requested victims to connect their wallets, enabling the cybercriminals to steal their funds. One NFT collector, known as Bokkypoobah, reported losing two valuable CryptoPunks due to the scam. The breach resulted in victims losing over $691,000 worth of cryptocurrency. Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao emphasized the need for caution when consuming content on social media and highlighted the importance of enhanced security measures.
