Krafton Unveils NFT-Driven Metaverse Game Project, Overdare
South Korean game studio Krafton, the creator of PUBG, has revealed its upcoming NFT-driven metaverse game project called Overdare. Previously known as Project Migaloo, Overdare will soft-launch in December and fully release between January and July 2024. Krafton has developed its own blockchain, Settlus, for the game.
Overdare is a mobile game platform built with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5, resembling Roblox. It offers generative AI tools to help players create their own shooter games, RPGs, and action RPGs. The platform also enables users to create custom avatars and chat with each other.
Features of Overdare
The first official teaser trailer showcases an open-world platform where users can build games and environments using AI tools. They can also play a variety of user-generated games, attend virtual concerts, and customize their avatars.
Krafton’s Partnership with Naver Z
Krafton announced Overdare as a joint venture with augmented reality tech firm Naver Z. While Krafton holds an 85% stake in the project, Naver Z holds the remaining 15%.
Create-to-Earn Game Economy
Overdare aims to provide players with a “create-to-earn” game economy, allowing them to buy and sell in-game digital assets as NFTs. The use of NFTs ensures transparency and secure transactions. Settlus blockchain will facilitate the economy and enable gamers to earn funds in USDC.
The Role of Settlus Blockchain
Krafton and Naver Z have chosen Settlus blockchain for Overdare’s economy. Settlus will utilize Cosmos to enable USDC payments. The blockchain, described as “the future of the creator economy,” was created by Krafton.
Addressing NFT Economy Issues
Krafton’s Settlus plans to introduce an “NFT licensing system” but has not provided further details. The company is also working to address potential issues with Overdare’s NFT economy, such as offering optional NFTs, addressing item scarcity, and volatile token prices that may negatively impact gamers and creators.
Future Plans for Settlus
It remains unclear whether Settlus will introduce its own token in the future. Krafton has not responded to Decrypt’s request for comment on the status of Settlus and the possibility of issuing a new token or exclusively using USDC.
Stablecoins and USDC
USDC, a stablecoin pegged to the U.S. Dollar, will be used in Overdare’s economy due to its stability. Stablecoins are preferred by crypto firms and traders as their value remains less volatile compared to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Hot Take: Overdare Promises an Immersive NFT-Driven Gaming Experience
Krafton’s Overdare is set to revolutionize gaming with its NFT-driven metaverse platform. By providing users with AI tools, customizability, and a “create-to-earn” game economy, Overdare offers an immersive gaming experience. The use of Settlus blockchain ensures transparency and secure transactions while leveraging stablecoin USDC for in-game funds. However, uncertainties remain regarding Settlus’ own token and potential challenges in the NFT economy. With its release scheduled for 2024, gamers and creators eagerly anticipate the launch of Overdare and the opportunities it presents in the world of gaming.
