Ethereum Scaling Protocol Allocates $26.7 Million in Free Coins to Community Voters
The Ethereum scaling protocol, Optimism, has distributed $26.7 million worth of its native token OP to wallets that delegated their tokens to community votes and on-chain governance. The airdrop involved 31,879 unique addresses that actively participated in on-chain activities between January and July 2023. Eligible wallets either delegated OP above the minimum threshold or delegated voting power to an address that voted at least once. The airdrop serves as a reward for positive-sum governance participation and does not require any action from users. However, Optimism warned users about phishing scams and emphasized that the tokens will be sent directly to eligible wallets. Optimism has committed 19% of its initial token supply to community rewards and airdrops.
Optimism’s Position in the Layer-2 Market
Since its mainnet launch in December 2021, Optimism has been operating in a competitive layer-2 market. In June 2022, the protocol conducted an airdrop of 200 million OP tokens to early adopters. Another 11.7 million OP tokens were distributed through “Airdrop #2” in February 2023. Currently, Optimism holds the sixth-largest total value locked (TVL) in decentralized finance (defi).

Hot Take: Optimism Rewards Community Participation with Airdropped Tokens
Optimism’s decision to allocate $26.7 million worth of OP tokens as a reward for community participation demonstrates its commitment to decentralized governance and engagement. By distributing tokens to wallets based on on-chain activity and voting power, Optimism incentivizes active involvement and strengthens its community. This approach not only encourages users to take part in decision-making processes but also increases the token’s distribution, potentially enhancing its value and utility. However, users must remain cautious of phishing scams and trust only official channels for token distribution. Optimism’s airdrop strategy contributes to the growth and success of the protocol in the competitive layer-2 market.
