Introducing Buenos Aires’ Innovative Digital ID Service Powered by Blockchain

The City of Buenos Aires Launches Blockchain-Based Digital ID Service

The local government of Buenos Aires is introducing a digital ID service that utilizes blockchain technology to store marriage and death certificates. This decentralized digital identity protocol, known as QuarkID, is built on Matter Labs’ zkSync Era rollup and incorporates technology from Argentina-based startup Extrimian.

Starting in October, residents of Buenos Aires will be able to download the QuarkID wallet and access personal identification documents like birth and marriage certificates. The government plans to expand the range of credentials available on QuarkID in the coming months, including proof of income, academic attendance certificates, and benefit claim documents.

Buenos Aires City Government Secretary of Innovation Diego Fernandez stated that this initiative aims to return control over data to individuals and facilitate secure digital interactions between government, companies, and citizens.

Equivalence between Physical and Digital Documents

Pablo Mosquella, COO of Extrimian, explained that the documents issued by the Buenos Aires local government platform are considered “verified credentials” stored on users’ devices. These credentials can be presented as proof in various situations.

Mosquella emphasized that initially, the digital documents will serve as an alternative to physical copies but will eventually replace them. The local government is currently working on legislative changes to grant digital credentials the same legal status as physically signed counterparts.

Hot Take: Buenos Aires Pioneers Blockchain-Based Digital Identity

The launch of the QuarkID digital ID service by the city government of Buenos Aires demonstrates its commitment to innovation and improving citizen services. By leveraging blockchain technology, Buenos Aires aims to provide secure and convenient access to important personal identification documents. This initiative not only streamlines administrative processes but also empowers individuals by giving them control over their own data. As more official identity-related credentials become available on QuarkID, it has the potential to revolutionize the way individuals interact with government and other institutions. The move towards digital equivalence with physical documents signifies a progressive approach towards embracing technology for the benefit of citizens.
