OP Labs Launches Testnet Version of Fault-Proof System for Optimism Network

OP Labs, the developer behind the Optimism network, has released a testnet version of its fault-proof system. The system aims to create a more decentralized and efficient Superchain once testing is complete. Currently, OP Stack-based networks rely on centralized sequencers to bundle and submit transactions to Ethereum. This poses a risk of fraudulent transactions being confirmed if an attacker gains control over the sequencer. Optimism’s report on L2Beat has highlighted this concern and emphasized the need for users to trust the block Proposer. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has argued that optimistic rollups should allow users to submit fraud proofs to block fraudulent withdrawals in order to achieve true decentralization.

Achieving Decentralization with the Fault-Proof System

The new fault-proof system developed by OP Labs aims to fulfill the goal of decentralization for OP Stack networks. It is designed to enable secure bridging without central fallback. The system is modular, consisting of three components: a fault-proof program (FPP), a fault-proof virtual machine (FPVM), and a dispute game protocol. These components can be implemented separately, allowing each network to customize its own fault-proof system. This will enhance diversity within the Optimism Superchain, ultimately increasing the overall security of the ecosystem. Networks may even choose to use zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-proofs) as a type of fraud-proof, which is not commonly used in Optimistic rollups.

Building an Interconnected Web of Blockchain Networks

OP Labs has been working on creating an interconnected web of blockchain networks known as the “Superchain.” To achieve this, they have developed the OP Stack, a set of software tools that enable the creation of custom blockchain networks. Avail network has also introduced its own OpEVM software for this purpose, using Avail as the base layer instead of Ethereum. Other competitors in the Superchain space include Polygon’s ZK Supernets and the zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine Hyperchain.
