Bitcoin Defies Expectations: Record-Low Obituary Count After a Decade

Bitcoin’s Declining Obituaries in 2023

As we approach the end of the year, the Bitcoin Obituaries list has seen a decrease in the number of death announcements compared to previous years. So far in 2023, there have been only seven recorded deaths of Bitcoin, according to 99bitcoins.com. This is the lowest number since 2012 when there was only one reported death.

A Historical Look at Bitcoin Obituaries

The trend of Bitcoin obituaries changed in 2013 when there was a sudden increase to 17 recorded deaths. The numbers continued to rise in the following years, reaching a peak of 124 deaths in 2017. However, there has been a decline since then, with 2020 seeing only 14 deaths and 2021 having 47 recorded deaths.

Recent Death Proclamations

The most recent death proclamation came from Chamath Palihapitiya, who declared “crypto is dead in America” during an episode of the “All-In” podcast. This statement was made back in April when the price of BTC was around $27,817.50 per unit. Despite this proclamation, the price of Bitcoin has remained relatively stable as we approach October 5, 2023.

Hot Take: Bitcoin’s Resilience Defies Death Predictions

With only seven recorded deaths so far in 2023, it is clear that Bitcoin continues to defy death predictions and maintain its position as a resilient cryptocurrency. Despite skepticism and periodic declarations of its demise, Bitcoin has proven its staying power over the years. As we move into the final months of the year, it will be interesting to see if any more death proclamations arise, but it seems that Bitcoin is here to stay.
