A Proposal to Bridge Ethereum and Flow Networks
A new proposal has been put forward to create a “gateway” software that would allow transactions from Ethereum to be wrapped and transferred to the Flow ecosystem. If approved, this would enable Flow (FLOW) to support decentralized applications (dapps) based on Ethereum.
The proposal, authored by Dieter Shirley, co-founder of Dapper Labs and Lead Architect at Flow, states that no changes in code would be necessary for full Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) equivalence on Flow.
With the proposed “gateway” software, developers could wrap external transactions in Cadence, a smart contract programming language for the Flow blockchain. This would facilitate the bridging of not only ERC-20 tokens but also non-fungible tokens (NFTs) deployed on the ERC-721 standard between the two networks.
However, there are still some challenges to address, such as mapping EVM gas fees on Cadence. The proposal currently has minimal engagement, with only 12 likes and no response or deadline mentioned.
Flow is a permissionless layer-1 blockchain developed by Dapper Labs and launched in 2020. It operates on the proof-of-stake consensus protocol and successfully raised $18 million through a community sale and auction involving nearly 13,000 participants.
Hot Take: Expanding Interoperability for Ethereum dApps
A proposed “gateway” software could bridge the gap between Ethereum and Flow networks, potentially enabling Ethereum-based dapps to operate on Flow. This development would provide greater interoperability and expand the reach of decentralized applications.
