You’ve probably heard of Starfield, but have you heard of Redfall?
Redfall, a vampire-themed first-person shooter game from Bethesda and Arkane Studios, has been a major disappointment. Despite being backed by Microsoft’s Bethesda Softworks, the game has struggled to attract players. It saw a sharp decline in concurrent players on Steam just two months after its release, dropping below 100 players. At its peak, Redfall only had around 6,000 concurrent players. It currently has a “Mostly Negative” player score on Steam with only around 2,300 reviews.
Redfall’s Lackluster Performance
Redfall’s poor performance is in stark contrast to Arkane’s previous shooter Deathloop, which received critical acclaim but also failed to retain players. Deathloop has had less than 1,000 concurrent players since November 2022 and currently has less than 150 concurrent players. In May, Xbox head Phil Spencer publicly apologized for Redfall’s launch and acknowledged that they had let down many gamers.
Criticism and Issues
Redfall has faced criticism for its bugs, glitches, and server issues. Many players have expressed frustration that these issues still haven’t been fixed five months after the game’s release. Some players have even requested refunds after encountering these problems. The AI-controlled characters in the game have also been widely criticized for their poor performance.
The Price and Perception
Another point of contention is Redfall’s price tag of $70. Many players feel that the game does not live up to its perception as a AAA title from a major publisher given the quality they experienced. The controls are described as clunky, the graphics as average, and the world as empty. Some players believe that charging $70 for an unfinished game is unreasonable.
Hot Take: Redfall’s Disappointing Reception
Despite the backing of Microsoft and Bethesda, Redfall has failed to meet expectations. The game’s low player count, negative reviews, and technical issues have contributed to its disappointing reception. It remains to be seen if the developers will be able to address these issues and turn the game’s fortunes around.
