Ethereum Layer 2 Network Scroll Launches zkEVM Mainnet

Scroll, an Ethereum Layer 2 network, has reportedly launched its zkEVM mainnet. According to on-chain data, funds are already being bridged to the platform. Over 330 ETH (approximately $515,000) has been bridged so far, with more than 850 transactions and nearly 500 unique users recorded on a Dune Analytics dashboard. The bridge deployment began on October 8th. Users can add the mainnet to their web3 wallets like MetaMask and transfer funds from other Ethereum-based networks to the zkEVM through third-party bridges like Owlto Finance. Some dapps, including ScrollSwap and Merkly, have integrated with the Scroll mainnet.

Scroll’s Challenging zkEVM Approach

Before launching on the Ethereum Goerli testnet in February, Scroll underwent a testing phase that included using its own clone of Ethereum for testing purposes. The Scroll team, consisting of 60 members and external contributors, has been developing the network for two years. zkEVMs are Layer 2 networks that use zero-knowledge proofs to enhance scalability on Ethereum. These networks are compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine and can support Ethereum applications at scale.

Hot Take: Scroll’s zkEVM Mainnet Shows Promise for Ethereum Scalability

The launch of Scroll’s zkEVM mainnet is a significant development for Ethereum scalability. By leveraging zero-knowledge proofs and offering compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, Scroll aims to address the network’s scalability challenges. With over $515,000 already bridged to the platform and various dapps integrating with the mainnet, it appears that there is growing interest in utilizing Scroll’s Layer 2 solution. As more users join and additional features are developed, Scroll has the potential to play a crucial role in expanding Ethereum’s capacity and improving user experience in the decentralized finance ecosystem.
