An X Account Associated with Rapper Nelly Hacked for Crypto Phishing
A Twitter account formerly belonging to American rapper Nelly was compromised by a hacker who used it to carry out social engineering attacks and lure people into a crypto phishing site. This information was revealed by on-chain investigator ZachXBT.
The attacker not only gained control of Nelly’s account but also changed the profile to pose as a security analyst for Scam Sniffer, a web-based security solution. The bio on the account read, “On-chain security analyst. Helping you catch scammers @realscamsniffer.” However, it appears that the profile has been deleted or removed, as the account now shows as non-existent.
Attempted Fund Theft Through Social Engineering
ZachXBT highlighted two messages sent by the scammer to individuals, in which they claimed to be investigating wallet approval compromises on the recipients’ addresses. This was an attempt to trick users into signing malicious transactions and stealing their funds.
Scam Sniffer confirmed ZachXBT’s report and warned users about the hacked account. They stated on X, “Please always make sure you are visiting scamsniffer.io.”
Representatives for Nelly have not yet responded to requests for comment from The Block.
