American Rapper Nelly’s Twitter Account Hacked for Phishing Scam
The Twitter account owned by American rapper Nelly, known as Nellio X, has been compromised by hackers who are attempting to lure crypto investors into phishing schemes.
Increase in Crypto Hack Attacks
Recent reports indicate a rising trend in crypto hack attacks, with over $700 million stolen in the third quarter of 2023 alone and close to $700k lost in phishing schemes in the past 18 days.
Nelly’s X Account Used for Phishing
The Nellio X account has been used to entice individuals into a phishing site. The hacker, posing as Nelly, claims to be an on-chain security analyst who helps people identify genuine scammers.
The attacker initiates contact by sending a message to the user and providing a link to the user’s wallet address on Etherscan. They ask if it is the user’s wallet.
Since the account is labeled as a scam detector and appears to be associated with another account called @realscamSniffer, users assume Nellio is a security analyst.
The user expresses caution and a desire to avoid hacks or unauthorized access.
The hacker claims to be investigating recent instances of wallet drains and compromises and points out a problem with the approval of spWETH from the user’s wallet. They mention obtaining the user’s information from Scamsniffer.
The hacker wants the victim to follow the provided link, but the victim is skeptical due to their lack of trust in Nelly and the suspicious nature of the transaction.
Zack XBT discovered the phishing scheme and posted it on Telegram. Scam Sniffer, mentioned by the hackers as their source of information, denies any connection to @NellioETH.
Nelly’s Involvement in Crypto
Nelly has been actively engaged in the crypto ecosystem, sharing images and tweets about blockchain and scams.
Continued Threat of Phishing Attacks
Phishing attacks remain a significant threat within the Web3 ecosystem, with investors losing millions each year.
Scam Sniffer recently tweeted about an attack where the victim lost about 93.24 ETH ($145K). Nelly’s X account reposted the tweet.
On October 7, another person fell victim to a crypto phishing scheme, losing about 299.49 rETH valued at $534K. Scam Sniffer shared the incident, and Nelly reposted it as well.
