Bored Ape Yacht Club CEO Acknowledges Game Development Shortcomings
Daniel Alegre, CEO of Bored Ape Yacht Club creator Yuga Labs, recently posted a lengthy essay on Twitter discussing the company’s challenges and shortcomings in game development. Alegre admitted that their game, HV-MTL Forge, fell short of expectations compared to their viral hit Dookey Dash. Yuga Labs has also faced technical issues with its game Legends of the Mara, including server outages and maintenance problems.
Alegre acknowledged that they need to rely on experienced gaming partners to help build their future experiences. This realization led to a recent restructuring at Yuga Labs, which involved laying off some U.S. staff after acquiring Roar Studios.
In his Twitter post, Alegre provided insights into the different NFT collections and initiatives Yuga Labs has undertaken over the past six months. He emphasized that although Otherside is an ambitious project, he doesn’t want Yuga Labs to be seen solely as a gaming company. Instead, he aims to enable gaming and other digital experiences that engage their current and potential holders.
Addressing Challenges and Looking Ahead
Alegre also addressed the delay between playtests for Otherside and admitted that improvements were necessary to meet expectations. He highlighted the difficulties faced by Meebits, a brand acquired from Larva Labs, and announced plans to integrate them into Otherside’s Meetropolis world.
Looking forward, Yuga Labs intends to collaborate with external partners such as spatial computing firm Hadean and game studio Faraway to refine its future gaming experiences. Despite immediate challenges in the industry, Alegre is focused on building for the long term.
