Aptos Restarts Operations Following a 5-Hour Outage Affecting Transactions

Aptos Network Resumes Normal Operations After Five-Hour Outage

The layer-1 blockchain Aptos Network has successfully restored its network to normal operations following a lengthy outage that lasted for five hours. During this time, on-chain transactions on the Move language-based blockchain were halted. The outage began at block 104621314 on October 18th, impacting transactions for more than five hours. Aptos acknowledged the issue with a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that transactions on the network had been affected and that they were working to resolve the problem.

“Your energy for Aptos One was so electric, you cut the lights!”

In response to the outage, crypto exchanges Upbit and OKX notified users about maintenance for the Aptos network and temporarily suspended APT deposits and withdrawals.

Prior to the outage, Aptos Labs celebrated the first anniversary of Aptos Mainnet’s launch. The project, launched on October 17th, 2022, was developed by former Meta employees who previously worked on Facebook’s Diem blockchain.

Other Recent Outages in the Crypto Space

Aptos is not the only blockchain network to experience downtime recently. The Theta Network team reported that a node upgrade caused blocks on the main chain to stop producing for several hours. However, they quickly implemented a fix and restored normal operations.

In September, Base, Coinbase’s layer-2 network, suffered its first major outage since its launch in the previous month.

Hot Take: Network Outages Highlight the Need for Robust Infrastructure

The recent outages experienced by various blockchain networks serve as a reminder of the importance of having robust infrastructure in place. As cryptocurrency adoption continues to grow, it becomes crucial for networks to be able to handle increased transaction volumes and ensure uninterrupted operations. Network downtime can have significant consequences, affecting user trust and potentially causing financial losses. Therefore, developers and network operators must prioritize the stability and reliability of their platforms to maintain a seamless user experience. Implementing thorough testing procedures, continuous monitoring, and swift response protocols are essential to minimize the impact of any potential outages in the future.
