Aptos Experiences 5-Hour Outage on Blockchain’s First Anniversary

Aptos Blockchain Suffers Outage During Anniversary Celebration

Last night, Aptos experienced an outage that lasted over five hours while hosting a mass drawing application to celebrate its one-year anniversary. According to data from the Aptos block explorer, on-chain transactions ceased for approximately five hours on October 18.

The AptoScan blockchain explorer revealed a delay of 5 hours and 6 minutes between two consecutive blocks, which typically confirm in less than a second. Additionally, the explorer showed a spike in Aptos’s transaction fee during the shutdown, increasing from 0.2 APT (worth around $1) to 1.72 APT (worth $8.58).

Aptos: A Move-Based Layer-1 Platform

Aptos, launched in October last year as a spin-off from Meta’s (formerly Facebook) crypto project Libra, is a Move-based layer-1 platform. To commemorate its anniversary, the Aptos Foundation created Graffio.art, a community drawing platform where Aptos wallet users can contribute to a blank canvas and create community art.

According to Mohammad Sheikh, co-founder and CEO of Aptos Labs, around 4,000 users were actively participating in the online canvas before the shutdown occurred. However, shortly after Sheikh’s tweet about the activity, the Aptos mainnet went down.

Efforts to Resolve the Issue

The Aptos team informed users via Twitter that transactions on the network were impacted as they worked to resolve the issue. It took them five hours to revive the blockchain. Decrypt has reached out to Aptos for more information regarding the root cause of the outage and steps taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Impact on APTOS Token Value

Following the temporary shutdown, Coingecko’s data indicated a slight 2.2% drop in the value of APTOS, the native gas-paying token for the Aptos blockchain. However, the token quickly rebounded to the $5 level. Overall, since its launch last year, APTOS has seen a 35.8% decrease in value.
