Efforts to Drive Bitcoin Adoption in Lugano Highlighted at PlanB Conference
A recent panel at the PlanB conference held in Lugano on October 20 discussed the ongoing efforts to promote Bitcoin (BTC) adoption in the city. The panel, which included Mayor Michele Foletti and Tetragon CEO Pavel Matveev, focused on PlanB’s mission to establish Lugano as a center for Bitcoin and blockchain innovation.
The panel highlighted the progress made over the past two years in educating and onboarding businesses and individuals onto Bitcoin and blockchain technology. This includes organizing educational summits, workshops, and a successful PlanB Summer School that attracted students from 30 different countries.
In addition, Lugano has launched its own Bitcoin-pegged stablecoin called Lugano (LUGA), which is accepted by over 350 merchants in the city. Furthermore, starting from December 1, the city government will begin accepting tax payments in Bitcoin.
$50 Million Startup Funding Allocated for Cryptocurrency and Blockchain Initiatives
The panel also announced a dedicated startup funding of $50 million that will be allocated to various cryptocurrency and blockchain projects. This includes support for Bitcoin core development, Lightning Network development, and a Public Initiatives Fund for local public-oriented projects.
Furthermore, plans were unveiled for a blockchain hub and co-working space in central Lugano, set to open in March 2024. This hub will serve as a centralized location for companies, developers, and entrepreneurs in the cryptocurrency and blockchain space.

The leaders emphasized Lugano’s strong commitment to becoming a model city for cryptocurrency and blockchain innovation. The next PlanB conference is scheduled to take place in October 2024, marking the third anniversary of the initiative’s launch.
