Classic Social Web Game Habbo Shifts Terminology for NFTs
The popular social web game Habbo, which made a recent foray into the world of NFTs, has announced a shift in its terminology. The company will no longer refer to its NFTs as “Habbo NFTs” but instead as “Habbo Collectibles.” This move is aimed at making it easier for players to understand the concept of collecting and trading items within the game.
Habbo’s decision reflects a broader trend among brands and companies that have moved away from using blockchain industry jargon when referring to their NFT assets. Platforms like Reddit have opted to call their NFTs “Collectible Avatars” and avoid using NFT terminology in their public communications.
Transition Process
While Habbo is changing its terminology, it will maintain the branding of its Habbo NFT Twitter account and Discord server for now. The transition will occur gradually, with most marketing and communications moving away from terms like “NFT,” “Web3,” and “blockchain.”
Habbo’s NFT Ecosystem
Habbo’s NFT avatars were initially minted on the Ethereum mainnet, while subsequent collections, such as digital furniture, are minted on the Ethereum scaling network Immutable X. Owners of the 11,600 NFT avatars gain exclusive access to a specialized server called Habbo X within the Habbo Hotel.
The secondary market prices for these avatars start at nearly 0.18 ETH ($275) on the OpenSea marketplace.
Hot Take: Transitioning Towards Clarity
Habbo’s decision to shift its terminology from “Habbo NFTs” to “Habbo Collectibles” reflects a growing trend in the NFT space. By moving away from blockchain jargon, companies are striving to make NFTs more accessible and understandable for their audiences. This shift aligns with the broader goal of expanding the adoption of NFTs beyond the tech-savvy community.
While some may argue that this rebranding dilutes the essence of NFTs as unique digital assets, it ultimately serves as a stepping stone towards mainstream acceptance and understanding. As more brands and platforms adopt similar strategies, we can expect NFTs to become a familiar concept in popular culture.
