U.S. States Sue Meta, Alleging Harm to Children
A coalition of 34 U.S. states has filed a lawsuit against Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, claiming that the social media platforms manipulate and harm children. The states, including California, New York, and Ohio, argue that Meta’s algorithms encourage addictive behavior and negatively impact children’s mental health.
The lawsuit alleges that Meta’s claims of providing a safe experience for young users are false and misleading. It accuses the company of using powerful technologies to entice and ensnare youth and teens.
Meta has previously implemented artificial intelligence (AI) to address trust and safety issues on its platforms. However, the government plaintiffs argue that these efforts are insufficient.
Meta Responds to Lawsuit
In response to the lawsuit, Meta stated that it shares the concerns of state attorneys general regarding the well-being of young people. The company highlighted over 30 tools it has introduced to support teens and their families.
Meta also asserted that research on social media’s negative impact is inconclusive and does not prove a direct link between social media use and teen mental health issues. The company emphasized its efforts to create a safe environment for teens by implementing age verification, private account settings for teens, automated interventions against suspicious adults, and content restrictions related to self-harm and eating disorders.
Litigation Continues
Despite Meta’s response, the government plaintiffs are proceeding with litigation. They argue that Meta’s actions have had adverse effects on consumers in their states.
The attorneys general demand damages, restitution, and compensation for each state listed in the lawsuit. They propose varying amounts per alleged incident, ranging from $5,000 to $25,000.
Meta Calls for Industry-wide Standards
Meta believes that the best approach is to establish broad and universal policies that apply to all social platforms. The company suggests working with other industry players to address the concerns raised by the attorneys general.
Meta is not alone in its investment in artificial intelligence. Other tech giants like Microsoft and Google are also heavily involved in developing generative AI.
