Canadian Scammer Exposed for SIM Swap Attacks
A pseudonymous on-chain investigator known as ZachXBT has recently revealed the identity of a Canadian scammer named Yahya, who allegedly participated in more than 17 SIM swap attacks, resulting in the theft of over $4.5 million. Yahya’s role involved searching for potential targets on platforms like Twitter using his control panel, which enabled another scammer named Skenkir to carry out the attacks.
Yahya received a percentage of the funds obtained from each successful attack as compensation. In one notable incident, Yahya collaborated with another scammer named HZ to defraud an individual named Amir of $250,000. This scheme inadvertently exposed Yahya’s wallet address, which allowed ZachXBT to link all of Yahya’s activities.
Overall, Yahya received more than 390 ETH (worth around $720K) from these SIM swap attacks. ZachXBT provided examples of three victims, including prominent figures in the crypto community such as Bitboy Crypto and PleasrDAO core team member Jamis.
ZachXBT also discovered that Yahya had spent thousands of dollars on luxury items and unreleased songs. Interestingly, before engaging in these unlawful activities, Yahya had made contributions to a financial news website called Benzinga.
SIM Swap Attacks and Previous Victims
In a previous investigation, ZachXBT uncovered that several high-profile individuals fell victim to SIM swap attacks. Among them were OpenAI’s CTO, the CEO of Bored Ape, and the Aptos Foundation. These attacks resulted in collective losses exceeding $13 million.
Notably, even Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin’s Twitter account was hacked due to a SIM swap attack.
