The US Commodities Regulator Rewards Whistleblowers with $16 Million for Crypto Tips

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) in the United States has paid out $16 million to whistleblowers this year for providing information that led to successful enforcement actions, with a majority of the tips involving cryptocurrencies. CFTC commissioner Christy Goldsmith Romero stated that crypto is an area with pervasive fraud and other illegal activities. Two whistleblowers alone received $15 million for their information, although the nature of the cases was not disclosed by the regulator at the time.

Whistleblowers Play a Vital Role in Combating Commodities Fraud

Romero emphasized the importance of whistleblowers in mitigating commodities fraud, stating that without them, the CFTC would not be able to fully protect customers and markets. Whistleblowers help identify fraud, interpret key evidence, and save considerable Commission resources and time. Romero acknowledged the efforts of the CFTC’s Office of Customer Education and Outreach in teaching people how to spot, avoid, and report cryptocurrency fraud. She also highlighted that with the rise of crypto, more retail customers have come under the CFTC’s jurisdiction.

Significant Rewards and Enforcement Sanctions

The CFTC has awarded nearly $350 million since the whistleblower program began in 2014. As a result of tips from whistleblowers, over $3 billion in enforcement sanctions have been ordered. The regulator achieved a record $3.4 billion penalty payment in an April Bitcoin-related fraud case and successfully concluded its case against Digitex CEO Adam Todd in July, resulting in $16 million in penalties.

Prioritizing Risk Management and Market Integrity

In April, Romero stressed the importance of managing risks associated with cryptocurrencies to uphold market integrity, national security, and financial stability. She advocated for stronger identity verification measures to minimize illicit finance in the cryptocurrency market.
