Musicians Silent on AI Use
A recent survey of over 1,000 artists reveals that almost half of them would not disclose their use of artificial intelligence (AI) in creating their music. According to the report, only 48% of the participants would be transparent about their AI utilization.
Artists Open to AI Integration
The survey, which interviewed 1,141 artists from the United Kingdom, United States, and Germany, found that nearly 25% of these musicians have already experimented with AI. Interestingly, almost half of the artists who haven’t yet tried AI expressed openness to incorporating it into their music and content in the future.
“Among those who hadn’t yet, 46% expressed their willingness to consider using AI music tools in the future.”
Concerns about Fan Reactions
On the other hand, more than half of the respondents expressed concerns about how their fans would react if they discovered their use of AI in music creation. The survey revealed that 53% of the artists had worries about how their audience might perceive music created with AI assistance.
AI Prevalence in Music Creation
The survey highlighted that AI is primarily utilized in the process of music creation, particularly in songwriting and composition. Artists found AI most valuable in crafting lyrics, followed by research and inspiration, as well as beat and rhythm generation.
In addition to the debate among artists regarding the use and impact of AI on fan perception, it has been noted that AI can also breathe new life into dormant art. For instance, The Beatles recently used AI to release a new song by enhancing the late John Lennon’s vocals from an old recording. This AI tool supported Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr in improving Lennon’s vocals from a low-quality mono recording.
Hot Take: Embracing the Future of Music Creation
The survey results indicate that while some artists are hesitant to reveal their use of AI, there is a growing openness among musicians to integrate AI into their creative process. Despite concerns about fan reactions, AI has shown its potential in various stages of music production, from songwriting to revitalizing old recordings. As technology continues to advance, it is likely that AI will play an increasingly prominent role in the music industry, pushing boundaries and enabling new artistic possibilities.
