Argentina’s Presidential Election and Bitcoin

A run-off election for the next president of Argentina will be held on November 19 following an inconclusive first round on October 22. Interestingly, both remaining presidential candidates have expressed positive views towards Bitcoin (BTC) and its role in the country.

This year’s election features Sergio Massa from the ruling Union for the Homeland party against Javier Milei from the Liberty Advances party.

It is worth noting that the recent severe inflation crisis in Argentina occurred during Massa’s tenure as Minister of Economy. However, he still holds this position at the time of publication.

In contrast, the incumbent president Alberto Fernández and former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner did not seek re-election.

Bitcoin-Friendly Candidates

The first round of Argentina’s presidential election saw Sergio Massa receive 36% of the votes, placing him in the lead, while Javier Milei secured second place with 30% of the votes. Despite not achieving an absolute majority, Massa has demonstrated significant leadership in his role as Minister of Economy.

Both candidates have expressed favorable views towards Bitcoin and its potential impact on the country. Sergio Massa plans to use excess natural gas from Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale formation to power Bitcoin mining operations. Meanwhile, Javier Milei sees Bitcoin as a natural response to central banks and favors it over centralized banking systems.

Argentinians have been increasingly turning to cryptocurrencies in recent years to combat inflation and financial oppression in their country. This growing adoption may gain further momentum after the presidential election in 2023, regardless of the outcome.

However, it is important to note that neither candidate has proposed making Bitcoin legal tender in Argentina, as El Salvador did in 2021.

Hot Take: Bitcoin’s Prominence in Argentina’s Future

The upcoming run-off election in Argentina presents an opportunity for Bitcoin to play a significant role in the country’s future. Both presidential candidates have expressed support for Bitcoin, recognizing its potential benefits and addressing issues such as inflation and centralized banking.

While Sergio Massa plans to leverage Argentina’s natural gas resources for Bitcoin mining, Javier Milei sees Bitcoin as a countermeasure against central banks. This favorable stance towards cryptocurrencies aligns with the growing adoption of Bitcoin among Argentinians.

However, it is crucial to understand that neither candidate has proposed making Bitcoin legal tender like El Salvador. Nevertheless, Bitcoin’s influence in Argentina is likely to continue expanding, providing individuals with an alternative financial tool to navigate economic challenges.
