Evmos Announces Plan to Phase Out Cosmos Transactions, Signals Alignment with Ethereum

Evmos to Focus Exclusively on Ethereum Transactions, Discontinuing Support for Cosmos

The core team at Layer 1 blockchain Evmos has announced their plan to discontinue support for Cosmos transactions and instead focus exclusively on Ethereum-based transactions. This means that the core network will only support Ethereum-based wallets and tools, leaving out those designed for Cosmos.

Streamlining Development Workflow and Improving Efficiency

The transition to a single transaction format is expected to streamline the development workflow and improve the efficiency of Ethereum wallets on the network. Evmos aims to complete this phased discontinuation of Cosmos transactions by the third quarter of 2024.

Simplifying Compatibility Challenges

Evmos’ team has faced challenges in maintaining compatibility for both Cosmos and Ethereum clients. The network currently supports distinct transaction hashes for each ecosystem, which adds complexity. By eliminating this complexity, Evmos can focus on simplification.

Enhancing User Experience and Interoperability

With an EVM-centric transaction approach, Evmos aims to enhance the user experience and interoperability. This strategic shift will ease the workload for developers by removing the need to support two transaction formats.

Maintaining Core Cosmos Functionalities

Evmos will continue to maintain core Cosmos functionalities such as staking and token transfers through EVM Extensions. This ensures uninterrupted access for users and developers to these features.

Focus on Ethereum Developers

Evmos’ decision to focus exclusively on Ethereum-type transactions allows them to align more closely with Ethereum developers and ship value faster. The native cross-chain interoperability protocol, IBC, will continue to receive full support and enhancements from Evmos, with the aim of making it easier for Ethereum developers to use.

Transition and Migration Process

During the transition, fees from phased-out Cosmos transactions will be burned. Users with Cosmos-only wallets will need to migrate to EVM-compatible clients, with support from popular wallets like WalletConnect, Rabby, and MetaMask. Hardware wallets such as Ledger will remain supported through their dedicated Ethereum applications.

About Evmos and Funding

Evmos is part of the Cosmos network, an interoperability network hosting over 50 unique Layer 1 blockchains. The project raised $27 million in a token sale round led by Polychain Capital last year.

Hot Take: Evmos Shifts Focus to Ethereum for Streamlined Development and Enhanced User Experience

Evmos’ decision to discontinue support for Cosmos transactions and focus exclusively on Ethereum-based transactions is driven by the goal of streamlining development workflow, improving efficiency, and enhancing user experience. By simplifying compatibility challenges and aligning more closely with Ethereum developers, Evmos aims to serve its users faster while maintaining core functionalities like staking, governance, and interoperability through its EVM Extensions. This strategic shift positions Evmos to cater specifically to the needs of the Ethereum ecosystem and further advance cross-chain interoperability through the support and enhancements of IBC.
