ENS Founder Urges Unstoppable Domains to Drop Patent
Founder and lead developer of Ethereum Name Service (ENS) Nick Johnson is pushing blockchain domains company Unstoppable Domains to abandon a newly obtained patent or face legal action. The patent was granted to Unstoppable Domains in January, claiming that Braden River Pezeshki, Matthew Everett Gould, and Bogdan Gusiev invented technology that employs blockchain to establish domains. The patent was submitted in 2021 to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Johnson argues that the patent is based on innovations developed by ENS and contains no new innovations. He stated that all of ENS’s work is under open-source licenses, with all standards publicly available for implementation. Despite the open invitation to join the Web3 Domain Alliance, Johnson warns that ENS Labs is ready to challenge the patent, which they believe to be derivative of their inventions.
One of the alleged inventors from Unstoppable Domains responded, extending an invitation to join the Web3 Domain Alliance, a blockchain domain registry organization allegedly pledged with the patent. This has sparked a debate within the crypto community about the open-source ethos and collaborative innovation in the blockchain domain industry.
Hot Take
The conflict between ENS and Unstoppable Domains highlights the challenges in the blockchain domain industry regarding patents, innovation, and open source collaboration. The outcome of this dispute will likely have a significant impact on the future of blockchain domain technology and open-source principles within the industry.
