Israel Cracks Down on TRON Wallets Linked to Militant Funding
A recent report from Reuters reveals that Israeli authorities are increasing their oversight of transactions on the TRON blockchain. This comes at a time when the crypto community is facing criticism from mainstream media outlets for its alleged involvement in illegal activities.
TRON’s Role in Financing Iran-Backed Militant Groups
According to the report, TRON has become a “key player” in the financing of Iran-backed militant groups, including Hamas and Hezbollah. Israeli authorities have consulted with financial crime and blockchain experts and analyzed data provided by the National Bureau for Counter Terror Financing (NBCTF) to uncover these links.
TRON is preferred by these groups over Bitcoin due to its faster transaction speeds, lower costs, and greater stability. Israeli security services have observed a significant increase in targeting TRON wallets in their crypto seizures since 2021, indicating a shift away from Bitcoin.
Shift in Preference Towards TRON
Merkle Science, a New York-based blockchain analysis firm, confirms this shift in preference towards TRON among these organizations. The CEO of Merkle Science, Mriganka Pattnaik, attributes this change to TRON’s advantageous transaction attributes.
TRON Founder Responds
In response to the accusations against the network, TRON founder Justin Sun emphasized that TRON is a decentralized protocol similar to Bitcoin and Ethereum. He stated that while they are committed to combating terrorist financing, their top priority is maintaining decentralization and ensuring the safety of everyone’s assets.
The NBCTF has frozen 143 TRON wallets connected to designated terrorist organizations or involved in severe terror crimes between July 2021 and October 2023. This trend became evident during the recent attacks by Hamas on Israel and the subsequent scrutiny of their funding sources.
TRON’s spokesperson, Hayward Wong, denied any affiliation between TRON and the identified groups. However, a significant portion of Israel’s TRON seizures occurred in 2023, including wallets reportedly owned by Hezbollah and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
Decline in Crypto Donations to Terrorist Groups
Alongside the backlash from the crypto community demanding more evidence to support accusations against the industry, there has been a noticeable decline in donations sent to Hamas and other terrorist groups using cryptocurrency.
Hamas even requested donors to avoid Bitcoin due to its transparency. As shown in the chart below, criminal groups are finding crypto increasingly useless for their activities.

A recent report reveals that Israeli authorities are intensifying their crackdown on TRON wallets linked to militant funding. TRON has emerged as a preferred platform for transactions associated with Iran-backed militant groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. The shift towards TRON is attributed to its faster transaction speeds and lower costs compared to Bitcoin. However, TRON’s founder emphasizes that the protocol remains committed to combating terrorist financing while prioritizing decentralization and asset safety. The National Bureau for Counter Terror Financing froze numerous TRON wallets connected to designated terrorist organizations. Despite allegations, TRON denies any affiliation with these groups. Furthermore, there has been a decline in cryptocurrency donations to terrorist organizations, indicating reduced effectiveness for criminal activities.
