Coinbase Transparency Report: Increase in Law Enforcement Requests
In its latest transparency report, the largest US-based crypto exchange, Coinbase, revealed that it experienced a threefold increase in law enforcement requests in the current year compared to 2020. The total number of requests during the reporting period was 13,079, marking a 6% rise from the previous year. The United States remained the leading country in both 2022 and 2023, with a slight uptick in the number of requests in 2023.
Countries with Highest Number of Requests
Out of the total requests made to Coinbase between Q4 2022 and Q3 2023, four countries accounted for nearly three-quarters or 73% of the entire amount. The United States led with 5,686 requests, followed by Germany with 1,906, the United Kingdom with 1,401, and Spain with 732. Australia witnessed a remarkable surge of 262% in requests to Coinbase.

Government Requests and Coinbase’s Response
These requests from government agencies and law enforcement include subpoenas, court orders, search warrants, and other formal legal processes. Coinbase emphasized its obligation to respond to these requests when valid under financial regulations and other relevant laws. However, Coinbase also stated that it might contest some requests and has the option to request refinement or limitation of the scope of inquiries.
