SEC Postpones Approval of Grayscale Ethereum ETF, Acknowledges BlackRock ETH Fund Application

The SEC Extends Evaluation Period for Grayscale’s Ethereum Trust Conversion

The Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced that it will require more than 45 days to review a proposed rule change by Grayscale. The change would allow Grayscale to convert its Ethereum trust into an Ethereum spot exchange-traded fund (ETF). The new deadline for evaluation is January 25, 2024.

This announcement follows news that BlackRock, a major investment firm, has received $100,000 in seed funding for its pending Bitcoin spot ETF from an undisclosed investor.

Delays for Grayscale and BlackRock

For Grayscale, this decision comes two weeks after the SEC postponed the evaluation of its proposal for an Ethereum futures ETF. The application was submitted in September.

In both cases, the SEC cited the need for additional time to consider the proposed rule changes and the related issues. This explanation is identical to the one provided by the SEC in a previous notice.

Seed Funding for BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust

BlackRock’s amended Form S-1 registration reveals that an affiliated investor has purchased 4,000 shares of its iShares Bitcoin Trust at a price of $25 per share on October 27. This transaction generated total proceeds of $100,000.

Hot Take: SEC Delays Highlight Ongoing Regulatory Challenges

The extended evaluation period for Grayscale’s Ethereum trust conversion and the seed funding received by BlackRock underscore the ongoing challenges faced by crypto asset managers seeking approval for ETFs. The SEC’s repeated delays indicate their cautious approach and the thoroughness with which they evaluate such proposals. As the crypto industry continues to grow, regulatory agencies like the SEC play a critical role in ensuring investor protection and market stability. While the delays may be frustrating for industry participants, they also highlight the importance of establishing clear guidelines and frameworks to govern the rapidly evolving crypto space.
