Report: Terra co-founder Do Kwon to remain in Montenegro until February

Terraform Labs Co-founder Do Kwon to Remain in Montenegrin Custody Until February

Do Kwon, the co-founder of Terraform Labs who is expected to be extradited to the United States to face criminal charges, will reportedly stay in Montenegrin custody until February. This decision comes after authorities from the U.S. and South Korea requested that Montenegrin officials hold Kwon for an additional two months following the conclusion of his prison sentence. Kwon, a South Korean national, was arrested in March for using falsified travel documents and was sentenced to four months behind bars.

Charges and Extradition Requests

Kwon has been charged in both the U.S. and South Korea for his alleged role in the collapse of Terra. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has also charged him with “defrauding investors in crypto schemes.” If extradited to the United States, Kwon would face eight criminal charges, including commodities fraud, securities fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to defraud and engage in market manipulation during his time at Terraform Labs.

The Collapse of Terra

Terra experienced a collapse in May 2022, which many consider a significant event that triggered a crypto market downturn. As a result, TerraUSD (UST) depegged from the U.S. dollar, leading many firms like Voyager Digital, BlockFi, Celsius Network, and FTX to file for bankruptcy.

Hot Take: Do Kwon’s Extradition Raises Questions about Regulatory Oversight

The extradition of Do Kwon raises questions about regulatory oversight within the crypto industry. With multiple countries seeking his custody and charging him with various crimes related to his involvement in Terra’s collapse, this case highlights the need for stronger regulations and enforcement mechanisms to protect investors and ensure the stability of the market. As the crypto industry continues to grow, it is crucial for regulators to establish clear guidelines and hold individuals accountable for their actions, preventing similar incidents in the future.
