South Korean Supreme Court Upholds 10-Year Jail Sentence for Crypto Fraudster
A crypto fraudster in South Korea has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for defrauding over 5,400 crypto investors and amassing $153 million. The man, known as Ko, was the CEO of QRC Bank, a crypto firm. Despite appealing the verdict, the Supreme Court rejected his appeal and upheld the original sentence. In addition to the jail time, Ko has also been fined nearly $1 million.
Details of the Fraud Scheme
Ko and his associates used three companies, including QRC Bank, to make their scam appear legitimate. They claimed that QRC Bank was an integrated financial platform that offered guaranteed returns of 300% on investments. Ko also convinced investors that QRC Bank was on the verge of being listed on Nasdaq. However, a police investigation revealed that Ko was using Ponzi tactics to pay off older investors with new investors’ money.

In addition to Ko, two other executives and a junior employee were sentenced for their involvement in the fraud scheme. They received prison sentences ranging from two years and six months to five years. The Supreme Court upheld these verdicts as well.
