Epic Games Stores Reopens Doors for Blockchain Games
The Epic Games Store, owned by Epic Games, has revised its guidelines to allow blockchain and Web3 games back onto its platform. This decision comes after some blockchain games received an “Adults Only” (AO) rating due to the potential for exchanging digital currency for real money. Previously, the store had a blanket ban on all games with an AO rating from the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB).
The change in policy now includes exceptions for blockchain and non-fungible token (NFT) games, as long as they adhere to existing guidelines and prohibitions on pornography, gambling, and hateful content.
Unchained Gods and Striker Manager 3 Return to the Epic Games Store
As a result of this policy shift, two games that were previously pulled from the platform due to an AO rating, Unchained Gods and Striker Manager 3, have been reinstated. Immutable, the developer of Gods Unchained, celebrated the decision, emphasizing the recognition of the gaming industry’s embrace of blockchain technology.
“We are pleased with Epic Games’ policy decision, and Gods Unchained has relisted on their store. This policy change shows that the space recognizes the experience of web3 gaming, and we are one step closer to adoption.” – Immutable
Steam Bucking the Trend
While the Epic Games Store welcomes blockchain games, Steam has imposed a ban on these types of games since 2021. Nevertheless, developers are still finding ways to launch crypto-related games on Steam despite the restrictions.
Hot Take: Promising Future for Blockchain Games
The decision by the Epic Games Store to readmit blockchain games demonstrates the increasing acceptance and relevance of this technology in the gaming industry. With major platforms like Epic Games recognizing the potential of blockchain and NFT games, it paves the way for wider adoption and integration of these innovative gaming experiences. As the boundaries between the virtual and real world continue to blur, blockchain games are poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of gaming.
