Tokyo and Seoul rank as the top two trending international hotspots for U.S.-based travelers in 2024, according to travel app Hopper. Similarly, Kayak’s data shows that the top five hotspots for Americans are all in Asia: Hong Kong, Shanghai, Taipei City, Tokyo, and Osaka.
Japan is also highly ranked among non-U.S. travelers, with Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo being among the top 24 worldwide destinations in 2024. The slow easing of border closures in Asian nations due to the COVID-19 pandemic has led to pent-up wanderlust among tourists who were unable to visit these countries earlier.
2. Going off the Beaten Path in Europe
Overcrowding in traditional European hubs has driven tourists to explore less-frequented areas. Stockholm, Budapest, Helsinki, and Prague are among the trending destinations abroad according to Kayak’s list. Copenhagen, Prague, and Edinburgh also rank high on Hopper’s 2024 hot spot ranking.
Experienced travelers are seeking off-the-beaten-path places to escape the crowds in cities like Paris, Rome, London, and Barcelona. Scandinavian travel is highly recommended due to its unspoiled nature and lack of overtourism. Finland’s recent membership in the NATO military alliance has also brought more awareness to the country among Americans.
3. The Atlantic Tropics over the Caribbean
Americans are now turning to Atlantic tropical vacations over the Caribbean for warm-weather beach destinations. Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands and Funchal in Portugal’s Madeira archipelago are ranked ninth and tenth respectively on Hopper’s international trend list. Málaga, a Mediterranean port city in southern Spain, ranks sixth on Kayak’s list.
The increase in interest for these destinations is driven by factors such as new emerging trends and lesser-known spots that offer lower relative prices compared to popular European destinations.
4. Canada’s Ski Mountains Are Having a Renaissance
Vancouver, Calgary, and Montreal in Canada are ranked highly on Hopper’s international trend list for 2024. Winter tourism plays a significant role in attracting visitors to these Canadian cities. Canadian ski destinations are becoming increasingly popular and rivaling European ski destinations.
In addition to the appeal of winter activities, air travel to Canada is generally more affordable compared to Europe.
