Truth Labs partnered with Manifold Labs to tokenize Steamboat Willie as an NFT collection. The NFT was created just a few hours after the short film entered the public domain on January 1.
Established in 2022, Truth Labs is the parent company behind projects like Goblintown, Illuminati, and Grumpls. The digital asset firm gained fame after launching Goblintown, a collection of generative NFTs exclusively hosted on the Ethereum blockchain network.
Released in November 1928, Steamboat Willie is an iconic animated short film featuring early non-speaking versions of Mickey and Minnie. The film had previously been owned by Disney. However, its images became legally available to the public on January 1, 2024.
According to US copyright laws, the characters in the Steamboat Willie film entered the public domain on January 1, 2024. This means anyone can now use or share them legally without any restrictions.

Truth Labs and Manifold Labs minted 2,000 Steamboat Willie NFT collections on the Ethereum blockchain. These NFTs sold out within a few hours after being created.
