To avoid further challenges related to privacy concerns in the EU, OpenAI recently sent an email to its users stating that its Irish entity, OpenAI Ireland Limited, now controls user data for individuals within the EU and Switzerland. The Irish base is responsible for complying with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the European Economic Area.

“If you live in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, OpenAI Ireland Limited is the controller and is responsible for the processing of your Personal Data as described in this Privacy Policy,” according to a TechCrunch report.

Although OpenAI Ireland is not yet fully licensed, it will help prevent the company from facing regulatory scrutiny similar to what it experienced in Italy. Under GDPR rules, complaints from other jurisdictions must be directed to OpenAI’s base where GDPR policies are in effect. Users who do not agree with the new terms have the option to delete the application or stop using the service.
