Spain’s Central Bank Initiates CBDC Experimentation with Fresh Blockchain Collaborators

The Central Bank of Spain, Banco de España, has announced its three blockchain partners for the experimentation of its Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). The chosen partners are Cecabank, Abanca, and Adhara Blockchain. The pilot experiment will focus on integrating a wholesale CBDC with the settlement of financial activities and providing practical evidence on the advantages and disadvantages of introducing a wholesale CBDC. The experiment will simulate processing and settlement of interbank payments with a tokenized wholesale CBDC and settle a simulated tokenized bond. This six-month experiment follows the trend of other countries, such as South Korea, Thailand, Brazil, and New Zealand, that have shown interest in developing their own CBDCs.

Spain leads Europe in the distribution of crypto ATMs, with 299 ATMs currently available in the country. The United States remains the global leader in ATM crypto rankings but has seen a decrease in installations compared to the previous year.
