Vanguard’s Opposition to Bitcoin ETFs Results in Client Discontent and Possible Account Transfers

About Vanguard

Vanguard is a renowned American investment company. Founded in 1975 by John C. Bogle, the firm is one of the largest investment management firms worldwide and is known for its low-cost mutual funds and ETFs. Owned by its funds, Vanguard’s structure ensures that its interests are aligned with its clients, resulting in lower fees compared to other investment firms.

Investment Services Offered by Vanguard

Vanguard offers a wide range of investment products and services, including individual and institutional investments, brokerage services, educational account services, financial planning, and asset management. The company also focuses on long-term, low-cost investing with a preference for broad market indices and index funds.

Vanguard’s Stance and Investor Reaction

Vanguard does not include support for US-listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in its brokerage platform offerings. Crypto investors were disheartened by Vanguard’s decision not to include support for Bitcoin ETFs on its platform as it considers spot Bitcoin ETFs to be misaligned with its well-balanced, long-term financial views. This has led some investors to consider transferring their funds to other platforms.

Investor Exodus to Other Platforms

Crypto commentator Neil Jacobs and Coinbase’s engineering manager Yuga Cohler have expressed intentions to move their investments away from Vanguard. Both plan to transfer their funds to other platforms, citing Vanguard’s decision as a poor business move.

Other Investment Firms’ Approaches

Clients of Citi, Merrill Lynch, Edward Jones, and UBS faced similar restrictions in purchasing spot Bitcoin ETFs. UBS is considering these spot Bitcoin ETFs on a case-by-case basis for “aggressive investors,” while some of the approved ETFs are available on its platform. In contrast, spot Bitcoin ETF trading was accessible on JPMorgan’s brokerage platform, with the bank being an authorized participant of BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF.

Hot Take

Crypto investors disappointed with Vanguard’s decision not to support Bitcoin ETFs are considering moving to other platforms to invest in cryptocurrencies, while other investment firms are evaluating Bitcoin ETFs for their clients.
