Ethereum Developers Express Concerns Over Gas Limit Increase
Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, recently proposed a plan to raise the gas limit of the platform by 33%. This proposal has sparked controversy within the Ethereum community, as many developers have voiced their opposition to the potential change.
Peter Szilagyi, Ethereum’s core developer and team lead, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his concerns about increasing the gas limit. He pointed out that raising the gas limit would result in a larger state size and increase the risk of Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks.
Another Ethereum developer, Marius Van der Wijden, also expressed his reservations about increasing the gas limit in a blog post. He highlighted the risks associated with this change, including missed block rates, slow accessibility and modification of data, and difficulties in building and optimizing a new Execution Layer (EL) client.
Alternative Solutions Proposed by ETH Developer
In his blog post, Wijden suggested several alternative solutions to address the challenges of increasing the gas limit. He proposed adopting regenesis as a short-term solution and delaying the gas limit increase until after the testing of EIP-4844, an Ethereum upgrade aimed at enhancing storage capacity. However, he acknowledged that there are currently no concrete solutions to mitigate the issue of an inflated state size.
Wijden concluded by advising caution and emphasizing the importance of understanding the long-term and short-term effects of changes in Ethereum’s gas limits.
