Solana Mobile Plans to Launch New Crypto Smartphone with Lower Price Point
Solana Mobile is set to release a new smartphone as a follow-up to its original Saga device, but this time at a more affordable price, according to a source familiar with the matter. The upcoming smartphone will feature different hardware specifications while retaining the same crypto-friendly features as its predecessor. These features include a built-in crypto wallet, decentralized application (dapp) store, and customized Android software.
The Saga of the Original Solana Smartphone
The original Solana Saga smartphone, developed by Solana Mobile and OSOM, was priced at $1,000 when it was launched in May 2023. Despite being labeled as a “premium Android flagship,” initial sales were disappointing. As a result, the price was reduced by $400 after four months on the market.
However, interest in the device surged later in 2023 due to the growing popularity of Solana-based meme coins like BONK, which were bundled with the Saga smartphone. By December, the Saga had sold out as traders realized that the bundled BONK tokens were worth more than the device itself.
Airdrops and High Demand
In response to the increased demand for Saga devices, Solana conducted a series of airdrops for Saga owners. These airdrops rewarded users with tokens and NFTs, including Saga Monkes. Currently valued at over $1,000 on secondary marketplaces, these NFTs have proven to be valuable assets.
Despite the decline in BONK’s value, unopened Saga phones continue to command high prices on platforms like eBay.
