Deadline Reports Star Trek’s Jonathan Frakes to Direct New Series for Jeff Garzik’s Web3 Production Studio

Commander turned director

Jonathan Frakes, best known for his role as Commander William Riker in Star Trek, is set to direct a TV adaptation of the sci-fi book series “Deathlands” for Jeff Garzik’s Web3 production studio NextCypher. Frakes has an extensive directing background, with credits including “Burn Notice,” “Roswell,” and two Star Trek films. Garzik, a prominent developer of Bitcoin Core, opened NextCypher in 2022 with the aim of producing innovative and high-quality genre entertainment. Frakes’ involvement aligns with NextCypher’s vision of creating exceptional content for a global audience.

“Hope, romance, and resilience in the face of adversity”

“Deathlands,” originally published in 1986, is set in a post-apocalyptic world and follows a group of survivors who rely on teleportation technology to navigate their harsh environment. Frakes’ appointment as director is highly praised by Altman, who describes the series as gritty, suspenseful, action-packed, and filled with hope, romance, and resilience. The series is scheduled to be filmed in Bulgaria this spring, with Garzik serving as executive producer alongside Thomas P. Vitale. Mark A. Altman will be both showrunner and executive producer. International sales will be handled by Tai Truesdell and Bertrand Reignier of Rogue Wave Entertainment, with casting by Christine Sheaks.

There’s more action-packed series to come from Garzik

In addition to “Deathlands,” NextCypher is also developing another sci-fi series that follows a woman who loses her memory while trying to save society’s outcasts from a deadly conspiracy that threatens the future. Garzik sees “Deathlands” as an ideal launchpad for NextCypher, considering the success of similar post-apocalyptic series like “The Last of Us” and “Fallout.” No release date has been announced for the new series.
