A New AI Clock Turns Time into Poetry
London-based technologist Matt Webb has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund his project, Poem/1, an AI poetry clock. Inspired by his interest in ambient computing and technology integrated into everyday objects, Webb used an e-paper display attached to a Raspberry Pi to create a prototype of the clock. Poem/1 uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT API to generate random poems that correspond to the current time. The clock doesn’t display numerals but instead showcases time-related poetry. Webb chose ChatGPT for its imaginative capabilities and plans to centralize poem composition and syndicate them out for production. Choosing OpenAI’s ChatGPT
Webb selected OpenAI’s generative AI model because of its imagination. While other models are getting close in terms of quality, they are less reliable and prone to instruction drift. Webb mentioned that GPT-4 can compose better poems but at a higher cost. The production version of Poem/1 will source e-paper screens and Wi-Fi modules from China and ship initially to the UK and US. However, shipping may be expanded to other countries later on. Webb acknowledged the concern of relying on APIs and server stability but reassured users by planning an escape hatch for hackers to set alternative server URLs.
