After reflecting on the casualty rate of crypto’s “main characters” following Sam Bankman-Fried’s departure from FTX, Buterin recognized that many influential figures he looked up to were no longer present. His own journey in Ethereum started with an internship setback due to visa complications, followed by his work at Bitcoin Magazine and the introduction of Ethereum at BTC Miami in 2014. The positive reception solidified his decision to leave university.
However, Buterin acknowledged that many of his decisions in Ethereum were influenced by external pressure and requests from others. He regretted accepting an invitation to meet Vladimir Putin in 2017, realizing that he had to take responsibility and be intentional about his actions instead of relying on others to lead. This led him to become more cautious about which plans he supports and more proactive in creating his own.

Buterin now believes it is time for him to support the next wave of developers and thinkers in the crypto space. He recognizes that he has transitioned into a different role and believes it is the responsibility of the next generation to carry forward the mantle that was once his.
